Driving to Bwindi from Kigali is one of the most popular cross-border trips from Rwanda. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in south-west Uganda is home to around half of the world’s mountain gorillas, and its southern sectors are only a few hours’ drive from Kigali.
Why visit Bwindi from Kigali
Many travellers fly into Kigali because the airport is close to both Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Uganda’s Bwindi. Crossing the border lets you combine both countries in one trip, see two very different forests, and add Uganda’s other highlights such as Lake Bunyonyi.
Getting to Bwindi from Kigali by car
- Drive north from Kigali towards Musanze or the Gatuna border, depending on which Bwindi sector you are visiting.
- Cross the border at Cyanika (near Musanze) or Gatuna (Katuna on the Ugandan side). Allow time for passports and vehicle checks.
- Continue to the southern sectors of Bwindi, Rushaga and Nkuringo, which are the closest to Rwanda. The last stretch is on mountain roads, so a 4×4 is recommended.
The whole journey takes around four to five hours from Kigali, depending on the sector and the border.

Bwindi or Volcanoes?
Both offer unforgettable gorilla encounters. Volcanoes is quicker to reach from Kigali, while Bwindi’s dense forest has more habituated families. Read gorillas in Rwanda or Uganda? to decide.
