Cross-border car rental from Rwanda lets you combine Rwanda with Uganda or Tanzania in one road trip. You can collect your car in Kigali, drive to Bwindi for Uganda’s gorillas or on towards Tanzania, and return to Kigali at the end. We prepare the paperwork the car needs.
How cross-border car rental from Rwanda works
- Tell us your route when you book, including which countries and border posts you plan to use.
- We prepare the car’s papers for crossing the border and make sure it is insured for the countries on your route.
- At the border, show your passports, visas and the car’s documents. Allow time for checks.
Popular border crossings
- Cyanika, near Musanze: the quickest route to southern Bwindi and Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda.
- Gatuna (Katuna), north of Kigali: the main road to Kabale and Kampala.
- Rusumo, in the south-east: the main crossing into Tanzania.
Border rules and opening hours can change, so we confirm the best crossing for your route when you book.
What you need
- Passports valid for at least six months
- Visas for each country; the East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya
- Your driving licence and an international driving permit
- The car’s cross-border documents and insurance, which we provide
- Some cash for any road fees on the other side
Driving in Uganda and Tanzania
Unlike Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania drive on the left. Take extra care after the border, especially at junctions and when overtaking. Roads can be rougher than in Rwanda, so a 4×4 such as the Land Cruiser Prado or TZ Land Cruiser is best.
Where we don’t recommend driving
We don’t recommend taking a hire car into DR Congo. Read is it safe to drive into DR Congo?
Visas for cross-border trips
If you plan to visit Uganda as well as Rwanda, the East Africa Tourist Visa is usually the easiest option. It covers Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya for 90 days and allows multiple crossings between them. Apply before you travel, and enter first through the country that issued it. Tanzania needs its own visa. Always check the current rules for your nationality.
At the border, step by step
- Rwandan exit: stamp out at Rwandan immigration and show the car’s documents to customs.
- Crossing: drive the short stretch between the two posts.
- Entry: show your passport and visa at the other country’s immigration.
- Vehicle checks: present the car’s papers and insurance; officials may record the vehicle details and collect any road fees.
- Change sides: remember to drive on the left in Uganda and Tanzania.
Crossings can take from half an hour to a couple of hours, depending on queues. Arrive early in the day.

Insurance across borders
Insurance for Rwanda doesn’t automatically cover other countries. When you tell us your route, we make sure the car has the cover it needs for each country on your trip. Read about car insurance in Kigali.
Planning your cross-border trip
Give yourself enough time: border crossings and longer distances add hours. Send us your route and dates, and we’ll recommend the right car, prepare the paperwork and include everything in one quote.
