Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s great lake, stretching along the country’s western border with deep blue water, sandy beaches and green, terraced hills. It is about three hours’ drive from Kigali and the perfect place to relax after gorilla trekking.
Why visit Lake Kivu
After the early starts of the national parks, the lake is a chance to slow down. Swim from the beaches, take a boat out to the islands, watch the fishing boats head out at dusk and enjoy fresh fish by the water.
The Lake Kivu towns
Rubavu (Gisenyi)
The lake’s main resort, at the northern tip, with beaches, lakeside hotels and a waterfront promenade. It is about 1.5 hours from Musanze, so it pairs easily with the volcanoes. See car hire in Rubavu.
Kibuye (Karongi)
A quiet town halfway down the lake, spread around bays and peninsulas, with islands to visit by boat. See car hire in Kibuye.
Rusizi (Cyangugu)
At the southern end of the lake, close to Nyungwe Forest, which makes it a useful overnight stop on the way to the rainforest.
Driving the Lake Kivu shore
The road between Rubavu and Kibuye winds through tea and coffee hills with views of the lake around almost every bend. It is paved but slow, so allow time to stop for photos. Any car in our fleet handles it; the Toyota RAV4 is a good budget choice.
