Huye, still often called Butare, is the cultural heart of southern Rwanda. It is the home of the country’s oldest university and its national ethnographic museum, and it sits on the main road from Kigali to Nyungwe Forest, so it makes an easy and rewarding stop.
Why stop in Huye, Rwanda
The drive from Kigali to Nyungwe Forest takes five to six hours, and Huye is roughly halfway. A stop here breaks the journey and gives you a deeper understanding of Rwandan history and culture before you head into the rainforest.
Things to do
The Ethnographic Museum
One of the best museums in East Africa, with exhibits on traditional Rwandan life, crafts, farming, architecture and royal history. Allow one to two hours.
The royal palace at Nyanza
About 30 minutes north of Huye, Nyanza was the seat of Rwanda’s kings. A reconstruction of the traditional royal palace, with its thatched roof, sits alongside the later colonial-era palace. The long-horned Inyambo cattle are often on show.
The university town
Huye has a relaxed, student atmosphere, with cafés, a market and shady streets that are pleasant to walk.
Getting there
Huye is about 2.5 to 3 hours from Kigali on a good paved road. Any car in our fleet is fine, but if you are continuing to Nyungwe a 4×4 such as the Land Cruiser Prado is more comfortable on the mountain road.
Frequently asked questions
Is Huye worth an overnight stay?
Most travellers visit for a few hours on the way to Nyungwe. If you want to see both the museum and Nyanza without rushing, a night in Huye works well.
Is Huye the same as Butare?
Yes. Butare was the town’s name until 2006, and many people still use it.
