Rwanda is called the land of a thousand hills, and its roads show you why. These are the most scenic drives in Rwanda, each worth planning your trip around.
1. The Lake Kivu shore road
The road between Rubavu and Kibuye, and on south to Rusizi, winds along the lake through tea and coffee hills, with views of the water around almost every bend. Allow plenty of time for photo stops. See Lake Kivu.
2. Kigali to Musanze
The road north climbs through terraced farmland and green ridges until the volcanoes appear on the horizon. Read Kigali to Volcanoes by car.
3. Through Nyungwe Forest
The main road runs straight through the rainforest, with misty valleys, giant tree ferns and colobus monkeys by the roadside. Drive slowly and enjoy it. See Nyungwe Forest.
4. The twin lakes
East of Musanze, small roads lead around Lakes Burera and Ruhondo, with island-dotted water and the volcanoes behind. Some sections are rough, so a 4×4 helps.
5. Akagera’s northern plains
Inside Akagera, the tracks across the open savannah are a scenic drive in themselves, with giraffes and zebras for company.
Tips for scenic drives in Rwanda
- Drive in the morning for the clearest light and views.
- Pull over safely for photos; never stop on bends.
- Don’t drive these roads after dark.
- A 4×4 such as the Land Cruiser Prado lets you explore the smaller roads.
Combine them all on the Grand Rwanda Loop.
