Where to Stay in Musanze

Where to Stay in Musanze

Choosing where to stay in Musanze depends on your budget and how early you want to wake up. Every gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park starts at Kinigi at 7:00 am, so most travellers sleep in or near Musanze the night before.

Where to stay in Musanze: town or park?

In Musanze town

The town has guesthouses and mid-range hotels, restaurants, banks and fuel stations. It is about 30 minutes from park headquarters and the best value base, especially if you are staying several nights.

Near Kinigi and the park

Lodges closer to the park, many with views of the volcanoes, range from comfortable mid-range lodges to some of Africa’s most luxurious. You save the morning drive and enjoy evenings by the fire with the mountains on your doorstep.

By the twin lakes

A handful of lodges sit near Lakes Burera and Ruhondo, east of town. They are peaceful and scenic but a longer drive from the park.

Tips for choosing

  • Book early for the dry seasons (June to September and December to February).
  • Stay at least two nights if you also want to track golden monkeys or hike.
  • Check that your lodge serves early breakfast or packed breakfasts for trek days.
  • Bring warm clothes: evenings at this altitude are cool.

Getting there

Musanze is about 2.5 hours from Kigali. You can also collect or return your car in town; see car hire in Musanze. Read our guide to Volcanoes National Park and gorilla trekking in Rwanda.

What to look for in a Musanze lodge

  • Distance to Kinigi: closer means a later alarm on trek day.
  • Views: many lodges look out over the volcanoes or twin lakes.
  • Warmth: fireplaces or heaters are welcome on cool evenings.
  • Parking: safe parking for your hire car.
  • Early meals: breakfast or packed breakfasts from 5:30 am.

How many nights?

One night is enough for a single gorilla trek. Two nights let you add golden monkeys or the twin lakes, and three nights give time for a volcano hike or the Dian Fossey trail.

Where to stay in Musanze for families

Choose a hotel in town or a family-friendly lodge with gardens, and ask about family rooms. Children under 15 can’t trek with gorillas, so plan activities for them on trek day.
