Umuganda is Rwanda’s national day of community work, held on the last Saturday morning of every month. If your road trip includes that Saturday, it helps to know what to expect.
What is Umuganda?
The word means “coming together in common purpose”. Across the country, people spend the morning on community projects such as cleaning streets, planting trees, building homes and repairing roads, followed by local meetings. It is part of why Rwanda’s towns and villages are so clean.
Umuganda and driving
- Traffic is restricted on the morning of Umuganda, usually until around midday.
- Shops and many businesses open later than usual.
- Roads may be quiet or temporarily closed for work.
Plan to start driving after midday, or arrange your travel for the day before or after. If you have a flight, allow extra time and check with us or your hotel.
Can visitors take part?
Visitors are welcome to join in; ask your hotel or guide about a local project. It is a great way to meet people and see Rwandan community life.
Plan around it
