Kigali to Akagera by Car: Route & Day-Trip Guide

Kigali to Akagera by Car: Route & Day-Trip Guide

Driving from Kigali to Akagera National Park takes about 2.5 hours on a mostly paved road through the rolling countryside of eastern Rwanda. It is the easiest safari in the country to do by yourself.

The route from Kigali to Akagera

  1. Leave Kigali heading east towards Rwamagana and Kayonza.
  2. At Kayonza, turn north-east towards the park’s southern gate.
  3. The last stretch to the gate is on a gravel road.

Fill up with fuel in Kayonza; there are no fuel stations inside the park.

Day trip or overnight?

A day trip

Possible, but long: leave Kigali before dawn, enjoy the southern lakes and drive back in the late afternoon. You’ll see wildlife, but you’ll miss the best evening and early-morning light.

Overnight (recommended)

Stay one or two nights inside the park to explore both the southern lakes and the northern plains. Read where to stay in Akagera.

Tips for your first game drive

  • Arrive early; animals are most active after sunrise.
  • Ask at the gate about recent sightings and road conditions.
  • Drive slowly and stop often; many animals are spotted by waiting.
  • Bring binoculars, water and a packed lunch.

Kigali to Akagera: what to expect on the road

The road east from Kigali is busy until you leave the city, then quieter as you pass through farmland, banana plantations and small towns. The countryside becomes lower, warmer and drier as you approach the park, a sign of the savannah ahead. Watch for minibuses stopping suddenly and for cyclists.

At the park gate

  • Register and pay your park entry at the reception near the southern gate.
  • Pick up a map and ask about recent animal sightings.
  • Ask about booking a boat trip on Lake Ihema or a guided drive.
  • Check the park’s rules on speeds and driving times.

Driving inside the park

Tracks inside Akagera are gravel and dirt. They are well marked but can be bumpy and slow, especially after rain. Drive slowly, stop often and scan the landscape. Many sightings happen when you simply wait quietly by a waterhole or a lakeshore.

Hiring a park guide

For a first visit, consider hiring a park guide to ride in your car. Guides know where the animals have been seen and help you spot wildlife you might miss.

Photography in Akagera

  • The best light is early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
  • Rest your camera on a bean bag or folded jacket on the window or roof.
  • Switch off the engine for steadier shots and to hear the bush.

Combining Akagera with the rest of Rwanda

Akagera is in the east, while the volcanoes and Lake Kivu are in the west. Most travellers visit Akagera at the start or end of their trip, passing through Kigali. See Rwanda’s Big Three for a week that combines all three.

Kigali to Akagera: wildlife to look for

  • Southern lakes: hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, elephants and water birds.
  • Woodland: impalas, bushbucks, baboons and vervet monkeys.
  • Northern plains: giraffes, zebras, topis, elands and, with luck, lions.
  • Everywhere: a huge variety of birds, from fish eagles to shoebills in the swamps.

Safety in the park

  • Stay in your car except at official viewpoints.
  • Keep a respectful distance from elephants and buffalo.
  • Never drive between a mother and her young.
  • Follow the park’s rules on driving times.

What to do if you get stuck

Muddy tracks after rain can catch out any driver. If your car gets stuck, stay calm, don’t spin the wheels, and call the park or our 24-hour assistance. A 4×4 with good clearance greatly reduces the risk.

A one-day itinerary from Kigali

  • 5:00 am: leave Kigali with a packed breakfast.
  • 7:30 am: arrive at the southern gate, register and pay entry.
  • 8:00 am–noon: game drive along the southern lakes.
  • Noon: picnic lunch at a viewpoint.
  • 1:00–3:00 pm: boat trip or a short drive into the woodlands.
  • 3:30 pm: leave the park to reach Kigali before dark.

A day trip is long, so share the driving if you can, or book a car with a driver. For a more relaxed visit, stay overnight.

Kigali to Akagera with children

Game drives are perfect for children, who can spot animals from the safety of the car. Bring snacks, drinks and binoculars, take breaks, and keep drives to a few hours at a time. The boat trip on Lake Ihema, with hippos close by, is often a highlight.
