Deciding which car to hire in Rwanda is simpler than it looks. The answer depends on where you’re going, the season and how many of you are travelling. Here’s how we help travellers choose.
Which car to hire in Rwanda: the quick answer
- Kigali and Lake Kivu, dry season: a Toyota RAV4 is enough.
- Gorilla trekking: a 4×4 such as the Land Cruiser Prado, especially in the rainy season.
- Akagera game drives: the extended safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof.
- Families and groups: the 8-seat Hiace or the Coaster bus.
When a RAV4 is enough
Rwanda’s main roads are paved, so a RAV4 handles Kigali, the lakeshore road and the drive to Musanze well, at a lower price and with better fuel economy. It is ideal for couples and budget trips in the dry season.
When you need a 4×4
- Tracks to some gorilla trailheads are steep and rough.
- Park roads in Akagera and Nyungwe are gravel or dirt.
- In the rainy seasons, mud makes a 4×4 much safer.
- Cross-border trips to Uganda often include rough roads.
Comparing prices

Which car to hire in Rwanda for your route
Kigali only
A RAV4 or Toyota Primo is ideal: easy to park and economical in city traffic.
Kigali and Lake Kivu
A RAV4 handles the paved roads to Rubavu and Kibuye well. Choose a 4×4 if you plan to explore smaller roads or Gishwati.
Gorilla trekking
A 4×4 such as the Prado. The road to Kinigi is paved, but trailhead tracks can be steep and muddy.
Akagera safari
The extended safari Land Cruiser, with its pop-up roof, is the best way to watch wildlife. A Prado works for smaller groups.
Nyungwe and the south
A comfortable 4×4 for the long, winding drive and park roads.
Uganda or Tanzania
A sturdy 4×4 such as the TZ Land Cruiser or Prado for rougher roads across the border.
Think about luggage
A RAV4 holds two large suitcases plus day bags in the 4-door version. A family of four with full luggage will be more comfortable in a Prado or Patrol. Groups with lots of bags should consider the Hiace or Coaster.
Think about the season
In the dry seasons, a RAV4 copes with most main routes. In the rainy seasons, from March to May and October to November, a 4×4 is the safer choice for anything beyond the paved roads.
Think about comfort
Long days on winding mountain roads are more comfortable in a bigger car with better suspension. If you’re planning several long drives, the extra cost of a 4×4 often feels worthwhile by the end of the trip.
Which car to hire in Rwanda: final checklist
- Where are you going: cities, lakes or parks?
- When are you travelling: dry or rainy season?
- How many people and how much luggage?
- Will you cross into Uganda or Tanzania?
- Do you want to drive yourself or travel with a driver?

Driving experience in each car
Toyota RAV4
Light and easy to drive, with a car-like feel. Comfortable on paved roads and good for city parking. It has less power on long climbs and less clearance on rough tracks.
Land Cruiser Prado
Smooth and powerful on the tarmac, confident on gravel and mud. The higher seating position gives good views of the road and the scenery.
Extended safari Land Cruiser
Built for game viewing rather than speed. The pop-up roof is the star feature. On long tarmac drives it is less refined than the Prado, but in the parks there’s nothing better.
Hiace and Coaster
Spacious and comfortable for groups. Best on paved roads, though the Hiace’s 4×4 lets it handle park roads in the dry season.
Which car to hire in Rwanda on a budget
If budget is your main concern, choose the RAV4 for the city and lake sections of your trip. If you’re going to the parks in the rainy season, though, a 4×4 is worth the extra cost for safety and peace of mind.
